Why do people who are anxious just like watching a horror movie?

Watching a horror movie often scares you. However, for a handful of people, watching a movie can be a means of stress relief.

The same thing is felt by some people who have anxiety disorders who like watching horror films. How could that be? Aren't you even more anxious about thinking as if a scene in a movie can occur in the real world?

Watching a horror movie diverts anxiety

Feelings of anxiety and fear that arise when watching a horror movie are often annoying because they can continue to haunt the mind even though the film is over. However, for some people with anxiety disorders, watching a horror movie can be very enjoyable. Why?

Anxiety disorders usually make a person constantly worrying about many things at one time. For example, problems in the scope of work, family, relationships, health, finance, and many more; starting from things that have happened in the past or worrying about the future.

No doubt all of these worries can make you unable to really enjoy the day. In fact, things that are worried or feared will not necessarily happen. Well, watching a horror movie can be one way to distract.

By watching a horror movie, your mind will be more focused to focus on the storyline rather than the things that make you worry. That is, you can "escape" for a moment from problems or various aspects of life that make you feel anxious.

Horror films will make you focus your thoughts and anxiety that hit one thing that has nothing to do with yourself.

Anxiety due to watching a horror movie is easier to control

In contrast to excessive anxiety which is a symptom of anxiety disorders, anxiety when watching a horror movie can be more easily controlled with the conscious mind. For example by closing your eyes or closing your ears when there are scary scenes.

Meanwhile, excessive anxiety due to anxiety disorder is quite difficult to quickly overcome or control because all the sensations come from your subconscious. Even someone with an anxiety disorder may never know what makes them anxious.

When watching a horror movie, people with anxiety disorders realize that a horror movie is only fiction and and all the scenes in the film will not happen in real life. Therefore, instead of avoiding horror films, some people who suffer from anxiety disorders actually enjoy it.

Moreover, the villain or ghost in the film will most likely end up dead or lost so that the audience will feel that in the end everything will be fine. In people who experience anxiety disorders, of course these feelings are very helpful in overcoming anxiety.

Therefore, horror films are one way to train you to deal with a complex problem and involve emotions both physically and mentally in conditions that are actually safe and can be controlled.

Watching horror films is part of mental health therapy
Unwittingly, watching a horror movie can also be used as a mental health therapy for people with anxiety disorders, namely exposure therapy. This therapy can you use to overcome fear or phobias and other mental health conditions.

If you experience anxiety disorders, this therapy makes you intentionally approach or involve yourself with something that you really fear. With this, you can prove to yourself that you can deal with these conditions.

Therefore, when you feel easily worried or afraid, actually deliberately watching a horror movie can train yourself to learn to deal with your own fears and anxieties.

However, please note that not all people who suffer from anxiety disorders, like to spend time to watch horror films. Indeed, maybe in some horror films can further aggravate their anxiety if they are not really connoisseurs of scary films.

Therefore, you should still consult a doctor. Especially if anxiety is very disturbing to your daily activities.
